Description:
An extremely hardy and fast growing shade tree with an upright vase-shaped habit of growth and a very dense branching structure, smaller and denser than the massive American elm and a better choice for home landscapes but more suitable for larger yards. Brandon Elm is a dense deciduous tree with a vase-like ascending branches and dark green foliage throughout the season. The serrated pointy leaves turn an outstanding gold in the fall. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant. The furrowed gray bark is not particularly outstanding. This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. Brandon Elm will grow to be about 40 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 25 feet. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 9 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 80 years or more. This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It is an amazingly adaptable plant, tolerating both dry conditions and even some standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. |
